あれる【荒れる】

1 〔天候が荒くなる〕 become [get] rough; rage; get [grow] wild.

●海が荒れている. The sea is troubled [rough, raging].

・海が荒れて漁ができない. We can't fish today, the sea's too rough.

・東風が吹いて海が少し荒れていた. There was a small sea rising with the wind coming up from the east.

・一晩中荒れていたが, 明け方になって天気は回復した. It was stormy all night long, but toward daybreak good weather returned.

・あの地域の天候は毎年今ごろ荒れる. They have stormy weather at this time every year.

2 〔あばれる〕 rage; get violent; run wild; get unruly; go on a [the] rampage; go [run] berserk [amok]. [⇒あばれる]

●その年は安保問題で学生デモが荒れた. That was the year student demonstrations over the security treaty issue became violent.

3 〔荒廃する〕 (土地などが) run to waste; be desolate [neglected]; (建物が) go [fall] to ruin; fall into decay; be ruined [ruinous, dilapidated, tumbledown]; be in bad repair.

●畑が荒れている. The field lies waste.

4 〔平穏な状態でなくなる〕 become unsettled [disrupted].

・ストレスで胃が荒れた. My stomach has become unsettled because of stress.
